A match promising to be challenging for the "Vietnamese Badminton Beauty".
On March 19 evening Vietnam time, the country's top badminton player - Nguyen Thuy Linh competed in the round of 16 at the Super 300 Orleans Masters 2026 held in France. Here, the player from Phu Tho easily defeated Lo Sin Yan Happy (Hong Kong) in just two games, thereby advancing directly to the tournament quarterfinals.
Thuy Linh's opponent was also quickly revealed, being Nozomi Okuhara —the world number 20 Japanese player, ranked six places above the Vietnamese representative in the BWF rankings.
Okuhara, born in 1995, is one of Japan's most outstanding badminton players over the past decade. In her illustrious career, Okuhara reached world number one in 2019; won a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics; secured one gold and one silver medal at the World Championships; a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games; along with many other medals with the Japanese national team and approximately 20 other titles at the professional level.
Although not at her peak performance in the last two seasons, Okuhara remains a player of high caliber and is expected to give Thuy Linh a difficult match. This season, the 31-year-old player has reached the semifinals in two BWF World Tour tournaments: the Indonesia Masters and the Swiss Open.
Thuy Linh and Okuhara previously met once at the 2023 World Championships, where the Vietnamese representative suffered a clear defeat in two games with scores of 15-21 and 12-21.
Since that time until now, the "Vietnamese Badminton Beauty" has continuously improved her physical fitness and playing style, thereby achieving major successes in her career including silver medals at the Super 300 level and once rising to world number 17 in badminton.
The match between Nguyen Thuy Linh and Nozomi Okuhara in the quarterfinals of the Orleans Masters 2026 is scheduled to take place at 19:20 on March 20 Vietnam time, on court number 2, as the fifth match (following the men's doubles match Hiroki Okamura/Kyohei Yamashita vs Lai Po-yu/Tsai Fu-cheng).
If she creates an upset against the former world number one, Thuy Linh will face Natsuki Nidaira (Japan) or Tanvi Sharma (India) in the semifinals.
