Japan's Samurai Warriors halted at quarterfinals, marking worst team record; Ohtani Shohei: "Extremely frustrated"

The quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic commenced in Miami, USA. After a fierce nine-inning battle, Japan lost to Venezuela 5-8, failing to advance to the semifinals. This marks Japan's first-ever stoppage at the quarterfinals, ending their title defense prematurely. Post-game, star player Ohtani Shohei could not hide his disappointment during interviews, admitting "it's truly very frustrating."

Japan had reached the semifinals in all previous five Classic editions, securing three championships and two third-place finishes. This year, however, they were halted at the quarterfinals, setting the team's earliest exit record. In this crucial match, Ohtani Shohei blasted a home run on his first at-bat in the first inning—his third homer of the tournament—giving Japan an early lead. Yet Japan ultimately couldn't reverse the game's outcome. In the ninth inning, Ohtani's final at-bat resulted in a fly ball caught, making him Japan's last player retired in the game.

About an hour after the game, Ohtani Shohei appeared for an interview. "It's truly very frustrating," Ohtani stated. He noted Venezuela indeed possessed strong capabilities, "We gave our utmost effort, but ultimately felt overwhelmed by their strength."

Reviewing the entire game, Ohtani believed Japan wasn't completely dominated. "In certain aspects, we actually had chances to win, and there were many winning factors; we weren't suppressed throughout by the opponent." Discussing this loss, he repeatedly mentioned "frustration," his tone revealing deep regret.

After the match concluded, Ohtani briefly bid farewell to teammates. He said right after the game, everyone might find it hard to contemplate next steps immediately, but there will surely be future opportunities for national team matches. "Many players in the team are still young; I hope everyone can continue striving toward the same goal in the future. We also told each other 'see you later.'"

Looking ahead, Japan's next target is the World Baseball 12 Strong tournament next year, competing for qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Regarding whether he will represent Japan again, Ohtani expressed that rather than seeking revenge, he hopes to challenge new stages once more. "Though it's unclear what form my next participation might take, if there's an opportunity, I wish to fully commit again."

After concluding the Classic, Ohtani will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers to continue the new MLB season.
