Johan Rojas has been training with the Phillies during spring training, participating in Grapefruit League exhibition games, and practicing with teammates. Over the past few weeks, he has been awaiting news about his future.
Today, MLB announced that Rojas tested positive for Boldenone, violating the league's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, resulting in an unpaid 80-game suspension. The suspension will take effect at the start of the 2026 regular season. Rojas will not be eligible to participate in the postseason.
The team issued a statement saying: "The Phillies fully support MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and are disappointed to learn of Rojas' violation today."
The 25-year-old Rojas was seen joking with teammates at Baker Field today. He played in yesterday's game against the Braves. Before rumors of the suspension emerged earlier this month, he was already considered a dark horse candidate for the Phillies' Opening Day roster. Rojas had previously declined to comment on these rumors.
Rojas' suspension impacts the team's outfield depth. The Phillies are expected to seek reinforcements in the coming weeks. At the start of spring training last month, the projected outfield lineup included Brandon Marsh and Otto Kemp in left field, Justin Crawford in center field, and Adolis García in right field.
Rojas was originally the fifth outfielder on the depth chart. If Crawford struggled or was injured at any point, Rojas could have filled in at center field. Now, if Crawford is unavailable, Marsh is the most likely candidate to move to center field. Beyond him, the next center field option might be Pedro León, who was demoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley today. León has played 205 games at center field in his minor league career.
León is also the only healthy active outfielder on the Phillies' 40-man roster besides García, Marsh, and Kemp. Rookie Gabriel Rincones Jr. is on the 40-man roster but has been sidelined this spring training due to knee tendonitis. Among non-roster outfielders in camp besides Crawford are Bryan De La Cruz and rookie Dante Nori. De La Cruz has primarily played corner outfield but has also logged 73 games in center field. Nori, who can play center field, is expected to start the season at Double-A Reading. Non-roster invitee utility player Dylan Moore has played 17 games in center field during his career.
Last season, Rojas had a batting average of .224 and an OPS of .569 over 172 plate appearances. Across his three MLB seasons, he has a cumulative batting average of .252 and an OPS of .633, but he remains valuable as a defender above average.
