Yoshinobu Yamamoto's Classic Post-Game Debut: 7 Ks Over 5 Innings, Strongly Announces Opening Day Start

Los Angeles Dodgers' Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto made his first start in Arizona spring training after the World Baseball Classic today, also his final tune-up before Opening Day. Against the San Diego Padres' split squad, he pitched 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, allowing no runs and only 3 hits. This quality start proved Yamamoto's excellent condition and built solid confidence for him to take the Opening Day starter role for the second consecutive year.

A heat alert was issued in Arizona; although the game was played in the evening, the temperature at 6 p.m. was still as high as 40 degrees Celsius. However, the heat did not affect Yamamoto's dominance. In the first inning, he started strong with three consecutive strikeouts. Against the first batter, after a 1-2 count, he struck him out with a 97.4 mph sinker low and outside; the next two batters were then struck out by his forkball and cutter respectively.

In the second inning, Yamamoto faced a scoring threat with one out and runners on second and third due to consecutive hits and a passed ball, but he quickly stabilized, striking out two batters in succession with fastballs and forkballs. In the third inning, he again displayed precise control, adding two more strikeouts in the inning.

Although the first batter in the fourth inning reached on a walk, and in the fifth inning there was a center-field hit after one out, Yamamoto showed his rich experience, inducing ground balls both times and initiating double plays to defuse the threats. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game: "Looking forward to seeing him pitch again after a while, expecting him to handle about 5 innings." Yamamoto completed the task perfectly, exiting after 5 innings with 68 pitches while the team led 3-0.

Reviewing Yamamoto's spring training performance this year: in two exhibition games in February, he pitched 4.2 innings total, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs; in the recently concluded Classic, he pitched 6.2 innings combined in the first game against Taiwan and the quarterfinal against Venezuela, allowing 2 runs and striking out 7.

As for Shohei Ohtani, in this game he batted as the Dodgers' leadoff hitter and designated hitter, had no hits in three at-bats, and struck out twice. His preseason batting average is 0.167.
