The Pittsburgh Pirates are negotiating a long-term extension contract exceeding $100 million with top prospect Konnor Griffin.

According to MLB.com reporter Jonathan Mayo, the Pittsburgh Pirates have discussed a potential long-term extension contract with MLB Pipeline's top prospect Konnor Griffin.

Sources told Mayo that specific details are not yet finalized, but discussions revolve around a nine-year contract totaling over $100 million.

Griffin, only 19 years old, is currently competing for the starting shortstop position on the Pirates' Opening Day roster. If he starts on Opening Day, he would become the first teenage player to make his MLB debut on Opening Day since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1989.

In 15 games this spring training, Griffin posted a batting average of .184 and an OPS of .805, hitting 4 home runs. His raw power and maturity have impressed his teammates.

"I'm looking forward to him helping us win a lot of games in Pittsburgh this year," Pirates ace Paul Skenes said earlier this spring training when discussing Griffin.

The Pirates selected Griffin with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft. He rapidly ascended through the minor leagues last year, posting a combined slash line of .333/.415/.527 across three levels, hitting 21 home runs and stealing 65 bases, finishing the season at Double-A Altoona. He achieved the fifth "20 HR, 60 SB" season in minor league history.

If Griffin reaches an agreement with the Pirates, it would be a rare but not unprecedented move. Seven players have signed extension contracts before making their MLB debut. Detroit Tigers' Colt Keith is the most recent player to sign an extension with zero MLB service time, doing so in January 2024. Recently, Baltimore Orioles' Samuel Basallo and Boston Red Sox' Kristian Campbell signed extension contracts shortly after completing their MLB debuts.
