Sometimes, you just know you're out.
Today at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles Dodgers star first baseman Freddie Freeman found himself in that exact situation.
In the bottom of the second inning with one out, Freeman hit a single to right-center field and reached first base. The next batter, Teoscar Hernández, hit a line drive to the shortstop and was caught out. Then Santiago Espinal hit the ball toward second base.
With two outs and the ball in second baseman Ketel Marte's glove, Freeman was essentially out. So, he decided to turn a tough situation into something fun.
Freeman stopped between first and second base, and Marte extended his hands toward him, signaling. Freeman jogged over, they shared a hug, and then each headed back to the dugout.
“I stopped and thought, ‘Is there any way around this?’” Freeman said. “If I run outside the baseline, I’m out. If I run back, he just steps on the base. He gave me the ‘come here’ signal, so I said, ‘Alright, let’s do it.’”
“I’m a big hugger, as I think you all know. I’m an emotional person.”
Freeman is known for creating unusual and fun moments on the infield—remember when he was chased by former Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo? Rizzo shouted “Frederick!” before tagging him out.
These lighthearted moments are part of baseball’s charm. Thanks to Marte for creating such a fun scene at Chavez Ravine.
