Following advice to be himself, Yankees' power-hitting prospect Jones is called up to the majors again

Spencer Jones made his way back to the major leagues for another opportunity, carrying his bat, glove, and some motivational advice from fellow Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre player Oswaldo Cabrera.

"Cabby shared a fantastic line with me before I got called up: 'New York doesn't require a savior—they simply want you to be yourself,'" Jones said before the Yankees faced the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

Jones was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as a corresponding move after Aaron Judge was placed on the 10-day injured list with a stress fracture in his right first rib.

Ranked as the Yankees' No. 6 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Jones was first called up on May 8 and then sent down two weeks later. That earlier opportunity came when Jasson Domínguez suffered a mild left AC joint sprain. Over 10 games, the 25-year-old posted a .167/.259/.167 slash line with two RBIs. In 43 games this season at Triple-A, he has hit 13 home runs and driven in 48 runs.

"I think what I learned most is the intensity and focus required to play here," Jones said. "You hear about it a lot, but you only truly understand it when you're in the middle of it and experiencing it firsthand. Experience is the best teacher."

While waiting for Judge's diagnosis during the series against the Guardians this week, the Yankees used José Caballero and Max Schuemann in right field. Now Jones joins the competition for that spot.

"I think his earlier call-up this season was valuable—it gave him a taste and a first big-league experience," manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, he's having a very strong season at Triple-A, so he deserves another chance."

More reinforcements are on the way. Domínguez will begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Thursday, serving as the designated hitter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Domínguez will start playing outfield on Monday and is expected to continue his rehab games.

"For me, he'll definitely need more than just this weekend," Cashman said. "Given the time he's missed, I think he'll require more than that."

Cashman acknowledged he has discussed the idea of Domínguez playing right field. But for now, the Yankees seem inclined to keep Domínguez in left and center field. This means Cody Bellinger might at some point share time in right field while the team waits for Judge and Giancarlo Stanton—who Cashman said may need another two to three weeks before returning.

"Whenever possible, it's always a good option. But priorities come first—first we need to get him back healthy," Cashman said.
