The Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the Los Angeles Angels today, suffering a crushing 5-13 defeat—their first loss to the Angels this season. Manager Dave Roberts was unusually upset after the game, condemning the umpire's rulings for shifting the momentum of the contest.
Several controversial calls disadvantaged the Dodgers during the game. In the top of the second inning, Jose Siri took a swing that appeared to involve a foul tip; catcher Dalton Rushing reacted immediately, but the umpire did not acknowledge it, and Siri ultimately earned a walk. In the fifth inning, Nick Madrigal came to bat and was involved in a check swing situation. Madrigal attempted to challenge a ball-strike call, and the home plate umpire granted the challenge, but the check swing itself was not reviewed. These incidents left Manager Roberts highly dissatisfied.
After the game, Roberts stated that home plate umpire Dan Iassogna had multiple ball-strike calls overturned upon challenge, and these decisions could indeed have influenced the outcome. Roberts also added that he hopes check swings will be eligible for review in the future.
