Diaz Fails to Close for Second Straight Day; Ohtani's Infield Single Ends Dodgers' Seven-Game Losing Streak

The Dodgers' record-setting closer, Edwin Diaz, once again couldn't hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning today, suffering his second straight save failure. But the team managed to end their seven-game slide with a 2-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks, fueled by Shohei Ohtani's run-scoring infield single in the top of the 10th inning.

Yesterday, Diaz surrendered a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth while leading by one run. Today, the Dodgers sent him back out to defend a one-run lead in the ninth, but he immediately allowed consecutive triples to Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll, tying the game.

Diaz pitched one inning today, giving up one run. Since returning from the injured list at the end of July, he has appeared in five games, allowing runs in four of them. Over those five outings, covering four innings, he has recorded five strikeouts, three walks, eight hits allowed, and five runs, with an ERA of 11.25. He has only one save and two blown saves.

Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw 107 pitches over 5.2 innings, marking his first start since June where he failed to complete six innings. He posted six strikeouts and three walks, allowing three hits and no runs, and left the game with the score tied.

The Dodgers' offense was also contained by Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt for the first seven innings, managing only two hits and no runs. After Pfaadt exited in the top of the eighth, the Dodgers finally broke through with a solo home run by Kyle Tucker to take the lead.

After the Diamondbacks forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth, Shohei Ohtani, who had been hitless in four at-bats with two strikeouts, delivered an infield single in the top of the 10th with two outs and runners on first and third, giving the Dodgers the lead. Meanwhile, Ryan Waldschmidt, who hit a walk-off two-run homer yesterday, grounded into a double play in the bottom of the 10th with one out and runners on first and third, allowing the Dodgers to end their losing streak by a single run.
