Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow took another step toward returning to the Dodgers' rotation, as he joined Triple-A Oklahoma City today for his second rehab start.
After posting a 2.72 ERA over his first seven starts, Glasnow has been sidelined far longer than expected since landing on the injured list in May with lower back spasms. He experienced a setback when he initially tried to resume throwing, but a gradual progression of his throwing program allowed him to move forward steadily without further issues. Now he has entered the rehab game phase and is expected to return to the Dodgers by the end of August.
Here are the details on Glasnow's latest rehab start:
How did he perform?
Glasnow pitched 2.2 innings against the Salt Lake Bees, the Angels' Triple-A affiliate. He allowed one hit, one run, one walk, and two strikeouts, throwing 26 of his 47 pitches for strikes. This was planned as a short outing from the start: Glasnow's goal today was to throw three innings or 45 pitches.
Glasnow's only run was surrendered in the first inning via a wild pitch. In the second inning, he overcame a walk and a stolen base with one out, ultimately ending his outing with a strikeout.
Glasnow's fastball averaged 95.9 mph, which is 0.6 mph higher than his MLB average this season, and he topped out at 97.7 mph.
What's next?
Glasnow will make at least one more rehab start, likely next Sunday, with the goal of increasing his workload to around four innings and 60 pitches. Manager Dave Roberts said that after that, the team will discuss whether to activate him. The Dodgers typically prefer to have rehabbing starters build up to about five innings and 75 pitches, but they could also let Glasnow complete the final step of his recovery in the majors if they deem it appropriate.
Any other news?
The Dodgers' starting rotation is increasingly nearing full strength. Blake Snell is scheduled to be activated from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday. Glasnow should follow in the coming weeks. Shohei Ohtani also made progress after starting a throwing program at Citi Field on Sunday, though his return to the mound still has no set timetable.
