Skubal experiences Dodgers home crowd for the first time; allows three runs in five innings in home debut

The buzz around Tarik Skubal’s arrival in Los Angeles culminated today. The two-time Cy Young winner made his eagerly awaited first home start at Dodger Stadium.

Since being traded from Detroit on August 1, Skubal has tossed five innings in his Dodger Stadium debut, giving up four hits and three earned runs, with six strikeouts on 95 pitches.

Skubal’s presence injected tremendous energy into the home crowd, but the ace left-hander faced early challenges as he struggled to find his command against the top of the Royals' lineup in the opening innings.

The Kansas City Royals struck first in the opening frame. Nick Loftin singled on a 98.5 mph fastball, and Bobby Witt Jr. reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second base. Rookie Jac Caglianone followed with an RBI single, hitting a 97.8 mph sinker, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, Skubal ran into his biggest trouble in the third. Loftin led off with a double with one out, and then Caglianone connected on a 91.5 mph slider, launching a two-run line drive homer to right-center, extending the Royals' lead to 3-0.

Despite some early difficulty consistently locating his fastball in the strike zone, Skubal quickly settled down in the middle innings. He retired the side on just seven pitches in the fourth, including a 98.6 mph four-seamer that Michael Massey swung through for a strikeout. In the fifth, he worked out of a jam, getting Caglianone to swing and miss on an 88.6 mph changeup with two runners on base to end his outing.

Matching Skubal's performance on the mound was the praise from manager Dave Roberts before the game. Roberts commended the left-hander's focus and drive to win his first World Series title after settling into Los Angeles.

"In this short time, he is completely different from anyone I've ever dealt with," Roberts said when asked about Skubal's mentality. "He's built differently—mentally, physically, his intensity, his humility, and his willingness to serve and help others. ... This guy is unlike anything I've seen."

Skubal's resilience was backed by a timely response from the Dodgers' lineup, which had been struggling to find its rhythm after a tough road trip.

In the bottom of the third, the Dodgers cut the deficit. Hunter Feduccia doubled to left field, and Shohei Ohtani followed with an RBI double to center field, putting the Dodgers on the board. Moments later, Freddie Freeman delivered a line-drive single to left, scoring Ohtani and pulling the Dodgers within 2-3, taking some pressure off their new ace.

Before the game, Roberts noted that returning home provided an opportunity for the team to reset, with the goal of executing with greater focus. He emphasized that talent alone would not carry them forward.

"The idea that 'we'll be fine, we're good' is not good enough anymore. Obviously, given our performance over the past month, it's far from enough," Roberts said. "We put ourselves in this position. But now, the whole team needs to play with a greater sense of urgency, and our players know that."

Skubal's start kicked off a star-studded week for the Dodgers' rotation. Fellow two-time Cy Young left-hander Blake Snell is scheduled to return from the injured list tomorrow.
