On July 28, Beijing time, according to renowned reporter Shams, James will take on a lot of point guard responsibilities with the 76ers in the new season, and that is the role he will play.

Shams said on the program: "I have been told that the 76ers plan to let LeBron James take on a lot of point guard duties on offense, initiating the offense and orchestrating Nick Nurse's entire offensive system. Last season, Tyrese Maxey handled the ball a lot as the point guard, and we also know that his scoring ability off the ball is very strong. Think about who else is better than James to create opportunities for Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe? The team has a bunch of scorers who can all receive LeBron's passes."
James has played forward for most of his career, but he is one of the best facilitators in league history, ranking fourth on the NBA's all-time assists list.
In the 2019-20 season, James played point guard most of the time and won the league's assist title with an average of 10.2 assists per game. Over the past three seasons, he has averaged more than 7 assists per game.

If James continues to play small forward or power forward as he usually does, the interior space could easily become crowded—Jaylen Brown mainly relies on drives to the rim and mid-range shots to score.
After switching to point guard, James can both deliver passes to Brown cutting to the basket, with Embiid inside and Maxey on the wing. For this 41-year-old veteran, this is likely the ideal scenario: he can contribute on offense without enduring the same physical toll as before.
The 76ers' final starting lineup has yet to be determined.

One potential starting lineup: James at point guard, Maxey at shooting guard, Brown at small forward, Dean Wade at power forward, and Embiid at center. Another adjustment option is to move Brown to the four, keep Maxey at shooting guard, and have VJ Edgecombe at small forward.
Edgecombe had a stunning rookie season and is likely to secure a starting spot in the new season, but Nick Nurse will need to flexibly adjust the lineup. Regardless of the final rotation the 76ers adopt, after adding James, the team already has a championship-caliber roster and is expected to be one of the biggest favorites for the championship this season.
