Essential Guide to Item Builds! Why Your Movement Speed Boots Shouldn't Stay the Same All Game? Switching Later Is the Key to Climbing Ranks

Hi everyone, I'm Game Xiaodi.

In Honor of Kings, boots are actually a very important piece of equipment that every hero must buy, because without them your movement speed is far too low. If a team fight happens and you need to rotate, it feels awful. But many players may not know that your boot choice doesn't have to remain fixed for the whole match. At different stages, you should switch to more suitable boots. Today we'll explain how.

Six Types of Movement Speed Boots

Before we dive in, let's briefly introduce the stats of the six movement speed boots. Except for Swift Boots which give 70 movement speed, all other boots provide 50 movement speed as their base passive:

Swift Boots—often called Attack Speed Boots—grant a 20% attack speed bonus and restore a bit of HP on basic attacks. These boots are mainly for marksmen, but also for some junglers and fighters who rely on basic attacks.

Sage's Boots—commonly referred to as Magic Pen Boots—provide magic penetration and mana regeneration. They are primarily for mages, but can also be used by mage-type heroes in other lanes who have mana.

Boots of Tranquility—usually called Cooldown Boots—offer 15% cooldown reduction and an extra cooldown recovery speed boost. They suit heroes who heavily depend on their ultimate with a long cooldown, as well as those who need high cooldown reduction, mostly mages.

Tabis of Warding—often called Physical Defense Boots—give 100 physical defense and 50 magic defense, while also reducing some of the physical damage you take. They aren't tied to any specific hero; you equip them when the enemy team has a lot of physical damage.

Stone of Resistance—commonly called Tenacity Boots—provide 100 magic defense and 50 physical defense, plus 20% tenacity (reducing control effects). No specific hero needs them; they're for when the enemy has many crowd control abilities.

Ethereal Boots—often called Speed Boots—grant 300 bonus max HP and extra movement speed. They aren't for a specific hero; you pick them when you need to roam and rotate frequently.

Why You Need to Swap Boots Later in the Game

First, the battlefield situation changes constantly, and your item build must adapt flexibly—boots are no exception. For example, marksmen usually pick Attack Speed Boots early to compensate for low attack speed, which is normal. But if multiple enemies keep ganking you and you die repeatedly, you should consider switching to Tenacity or Physical Defense Boots to prioritize survivability over attack speed damage.

Second, the importance of stats shifts over time. Take Attack Speed Boots again: they're very useful early on, but by the mid-to-late game, marksmen have other items that provide attack speed, so the bonus from these boots becomes less valuable—you're better off swapping to a different pair. Another example: Magic Pen Boots are great early, but once you have items like Void Staff or Deicide of Avarice, their penetration isn't impressive anymore.
