Michael Carrick has warned Manchester United players that the team cannot rely on finishing fifth alone to secure a Champions League spot next season.
Manchester United will host Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the 30th round of the Premier League. Before this round, the two teams are ranked third and fourth respectively on the league table.
This season, the top five English clubs have secured direct Champions League qualification. Newcastle is the team that helped the Premier League gain an additional spot due to the performance of English clubs in European competitions. It is likely that a similar scenario will repeat next season.
However, coach Michael Carrick reminded his players not to assume that the fifth position will definitely be enough for Champions League qualification. Instead, he wants the team to aim higher in the competition with Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Liverpool for the top positions behind Arsenal and Manchester City.
The English strategist shared: “We have to give our full effort, there is no other way. Things may change or not, but that is not within our control.”
He added: “It is best for us to aim for higher positions. The team does not think about which position is sufficient. The important thing is to focus on each match and strive to win. It sounds simple, but that is the reality. You cannot plan based on being fourth or fifth; you can only focus on the next game.”
Manchester United enters the match against Aston Villa after a defeat against Newcastle, their first loss after a run of eight matches since Carrick returned to lead the team.
The 44-year-old manager believes the players will respond positively after this defeat. He said: “We do not like losing, absolutely do not like it. The goal is always to win every match, but sometimes we also need to view things with balance.”
Carrick continued: “The players reacted very well. They were disappointed after the match, which is normal. But we did not make things more serious than necessary. When doing the right things, we are a strong team with many quality players. We have demonstrated that recently and need to continue showing it.”
The match between Manchester United and Aston Villa will take place at 21:00 tonight (March 15).
