Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai candidly admitted that Liverpool is experiencing a serious decline, stating that if they continue with their current form, the team will struggle to maintain the image of champions in the Premier League.
Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has candidly admitted that Liverpool is going through a difficult period, as the team's form has clearly deteriorated compared to last season despite having won the Premier League.
Speaking to the media after the 1-1 draw with Tottenham, Szoboszlai said he understands the fans' disappointment when the team no longer performs like champions. The Hungarian midfielder admitted Liverpool is currently playing below expectations: “I understand the fans' feelings. Last season we were champions, but right now we are not playing like champions,” Szoboszlai shared.
The 25-year-old player recalled that last season Liverpool clinched the title four matches early, which demonstrated the team's dominance at that time. However, he also admitted that everything changed very quickly just after one season: “Last season we became champions with four matches still left to play. Everyone was very happy then. Now we need support from the fans,” the Liverpool midfielder added.
Unable to hide his disappointment, Szoboszlai believes the whole team needs to quickly sit down together to find a way through this difficult period. He emphasized that team unity is the most crucial factor at this moment: “We will sit down together. This is the most difficult time, but the whole team must bond together to overcome it,” he affirmed.
The Hungarian star also warned that if Liverpool continues to maintain this form into the next season, the team's goals might have to be significantly lowered: “If we continue like this into next season, perhaps we should be happy if we get to play in the Conference League,” Szoboszlai candidly admitted.
Closing the interview, the Liverpool midfielder said the whole team needs to quickly “wake up” after a series of disappointing matches this season: “I really don't know what to say. We have to wake up. This is a huge disappointment and it's hard to understand because this has happened many times this season,” Szoboszlai concluded.
