Southeast Asian fans collectively react as Malaysia is officially ruled to lose against Vietnam

The AFC's ruling results in Malaysia being declared defeated by Vietnam, overturning the group standings and igniting fierce controversy among the Southeast Asian fan community.

The decision from AFC completely alters the landscape of the group stage for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers and simultaneously sparks intense debate within the Southeast Asian fan community.

According to the official announcement from the AFC Disciplinary & Ethics Committee today, March 17, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) was found to have violated Article 56 of the Disciplinary & Ethics Code by using an ineligible player in two matches of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Specifically, Malaysia's two victories against Nepal (2-0 on March 25, 2025) and notably the heavy 4-0 win over Vietnam (June 10, 2025) have been annulled. AFC also applied Article 25.1 to rule Malaysia a 0-3 loss in both matches.

This decision not only strips Malaysia of 6 points but also drops them to second place with 9 points, while the Vietnam national team rises to lead the group with 15 points. Additionally, FAM must pay a $50,000 fine, thereby facing immense pressure in the race to secure a spot for the 2027 Asian Cup Finals in Saudi Arabia.

Immediately after the penalty was announced, the Southeast Asian fan community erupted in debate on social media with diverse opposing views.

An Indonesian fan commented: “Rules are rules, Malaysia must take responsibility. Vietnam deserves justice restored.”

Meanwhile, a Thai fan expressed surprise: “It's unbelievable that a major national team could make such a basic mistake. This severely impacts the image of regional football.”

On the other side, a Malaysian fan voiced frustration: “We need a clear explanation from AFC. This is a massive shock and affects our Asian Cup dream.”

A Vietnamese fan shared: “The victory is restored according to the rules, but this method still leaves fans regretful as the on-field result no longer holds value.”
