Lamine Yamal continues to shock the Champions League by setting a historic record, playing a key role in Barcelona's crushing defeat of Newcastle to secure a convincing quarter-final ticket.
An emotional night of play witnessed young star Lamine Yamal continue to make history, playing a major part in Barcelona's overwhelming victory over Newcastle United and securing a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.
At 18 years and 248 days old, Yamal officially became the youngest player ever to score 10 goals in the Champions League, surpassing the previous record held by Kylian Mbappe (18 years and 350 days). This historic milestone was set at the end of the first half, when the Spanish talent calmly converted a penalty, raising the score to 3-2 for Barcelona at Camp Nou.
This goal also allowed Yamal to "redeem himself" after a previous misplaced pass that indirectly led to Newcastle equalizing in the 28th minute. However, the penalty conversion became a turning point, paving the way for the home team's victory. In the second half, Barcelona continued to explode with four more goals against goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, thus concluding the match with a dominant win and securing advancement with an aggregate score of 8-3.
Not only breaking Mbappe's record, Yamal also established another impressive milestone by becoming the youngest player to score in two consecutive knockout-stage matches in the Champions League. Previously, he had also scored at St James' Park to help Barcelona draw 1-1 in the first leg.
Although his two recent goals came from penalty spots and lacked the technical flair often seen, they still demonstrated the playing composure and astonishing coolness of the 18-year-old player under pressure.
Notably, within just eight days, Yamal broke three Champions League records, including becoming the youngest player to reach 30 appearances in this prestigious tournament. At the collective level, Yamal has already harvested many trophies with Barcelona, including last season's domestic treble, the 2022-23 La Liga title, and this season's Spanish Super Cup. However, the Champions League remains the missing piece in this young talent's collection.
After stopping in the semi-finals last season against Inter Milan, Barcelona aims to conquer the European pinnacle in the 2025-26 season. The Catalan club's most recent Champions League title was in 2015, and with a promising young squad like Yamal and Pedri, they are determined to end the decade-long wait.
