Philippines Defeats Uzbekistan in Play-off to Officially Secure Spot in Women's World Cup Finals

Two goals in the second half by Angela Beard and Jaclyn Sawicki helped Philippines secure a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the match for qualification to the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027. This win enables Philippines to earn a World Cup spot for the second consecutive time, while Uzbekistan still hopes to make its first appearance on the international stage through the inter-confederation play-off in 2026.

Uzbekistan started with an attacking trio of Diyorakhon Khabibullaeva, Umida Zoirova, and Nilufar Kudratova, while Beard and goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel returned to the Philippines starting lineup. Philippines applied pressure early in the match with Sara Eggesvik's skillful dribble past Dilrabo Asadova and Zarina Mamatkarimova before launching a shot from outside the penalty area, which missed the left post.

Philippines had a dream start in the second half, taking the lead just two minutes after the restart thanks to a precise pass from Jael-Marie Guy, the ball reaching Beard whose volley hit the crossbar before bouncing into the net.

The Southeast Asian team scored the second goal in the 52nd minute after Guy delivered another curved pass to Sawicki, who headed the ball over Jonimqulova and into the lower right corner of the goal. Uzbekistan was stunned and unable to respond as Philippines comfortably secured victory to definitively earn a spot in the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027.

Thus, Philippines is the only Southeast Asian team to secure a spot in the 2027 Women's World Cup Finals in Brazil. The Vietnamese women's team also participated in the 2026 Women's Asian Cup Finals but was eliminated in the group stage, while Thailand even failed to qualify for the Asian Cup Finals. This also marks the second consecutive time Philippines participates in the Women's World Cup.
