The departure of goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro has left the football community stunned, with a host of top clubs and former pupils collectively offering tributes, commemorating the highly committed teacher.
On March 20, Real Madrid Club issued an official announcement regarding the passing of former goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro, who spent three years working at the Spanish Royal club.
In the statement, Real Madrid expressed profound sorrow: “The President, the board of directors, and the entire Real Madrid Club are deeply saddened by the passing of Silvino Louro, the team's goalkeeping coach from 2010 to 2013. We extend our deepest condolences, along with love and solidarity, to his family, colleagues, clubs, and loved ones.”
After his time at the Bernabéu, Silvino Louro joined Manchester United in 2016 upon the invitation of coach Jose Mourinho and remained with the club for three seasons. At Old Trafford, he worked with notable goalkeepers such as David De Gea, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone, and Joel Pereira. Following the departure of his former mentor, De Gea posted a brief but heartfelt status: “Rest in peace, coach.”
During his tenure at Man Utd, Louro contributed to the team winning the Europa League and the League Cup. Previously, he also worked at major clubs like Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Porto.
Silvino Louro began his coaching career in the early 2000s after retiring as a player. During his playing days, he wore the shirts of prestigious Portuguese clubs such as Porto, Benfica, and Vitoria Setubal, and made 23 appearances for the national team.
Louro's passing has saddened the football community. On social media, many fans sent tributes, including one Real Madrid fan who wrote: “One of our own has departed. May he rest in the arms of God.” Another shared: “Even Mourinho mentioned him today… Rest in peace, Silvino.”
Benfica Club also conveyed a message of condolence: “Sport Lisboa e Benfica expresses deep sorrow over the passing of Silvino. As a former goalkeeper of the club and the national team, he will forever be remembered as an icon of a generation that brought great pride to the team.”
Meanwhile, Porto affirmed: “FC Porto is mourning the loss of Silvino Louro. As a player, he won two national championships and one Super Cup. As a goalkeeping coach, he secured eight more titles, including the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. The club extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
