As FIFA officially launches the FIFA ASEAN Cup for Southeast Asia, Vietnam's national team faces a major opportunity to achieve two consecutive titles in 2026.
During the meeting on March 19, the FIFA Council officially approved the organization of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the first edition scheduled to take place in September–October 2026.This decision not only marks a new step in FIFA's global football development strategy but also opens up considerable breakthrough opportunities for the Southeast Asian region.
Thus, in 2026, the Vietnamese national team will participate consecutively in two tournaments within Southeast Asia. Specifically, from July 24 to August 26, Coach Kim Sang Sik and his squad will compete in the 2026 ASEAN Cup Championship—a biennial tournament organized by the Southeast Asian Football Federation. One month later, the team is expected to continue participating in the FIFA ASEAN Cup organized by FIFA.
As the defending champion of the ASEAN Cup 2024, the "Golden Star Warriors" can certainly envision the scenario of claiming the championship in both of these regional competitions. Previously, under the guidance of Coach Kim Sang Sik, Vietnam's national team excellently defeated Thailand in both final matches, thereby securing the top position.
Not only in terms of titles, from a professional perspective, the FIFA ASEAN Cup promises to create a high-quality competitive environment, complementing the existing competition system in the region. For member federations, including Vietnam, the FIFA ASEAN Cup is not just a new playing field but also an opportunity to affirm their status, increase influence, and promote the professionalization process.
In the context of Vietnamese football aiming for long-term goals at continental and world levels, participating and effectively utilizing this platform will carry positive developmental significance.
