Germany squad announcement: 'Toni Kroos 2.0' emerges into the spotlight

The German national team announced its March squad, highlighted by newcomer Lennart Karl, while Jamal Musiala is absent due to injury, opening opportunities for many young talents to showcase themselves.

German national team has just announced the squad for the upcoming international friendly matches in late March against Switzerland (March 27) and Ghana (March 30), with notable points surrounding new players and absentees.

The focus of this squad call-up is the first-time inclusion of two young players from Bayern Munich: goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and forward Lennart Karl. Among them, Karl receives more attention as he emerges as a phenomenon and is hailed as Germany's new Toni Kroos. At 18 years old, he has impressed with his acceleration, technical skills, and notably became the youngest Bayern player ever to score in the Champions League.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann stated that he expects Karl to bring a fresh energy to the national team through his boldness and fearless spirit. The German strategist emphasized that he will not place excessive pressure on the young player, but rather allow him to fully express his natural qualities in his first national team appearance.

Alongside Karl, goalkeeper Jonas Urbig also marks a significant career step with his first national team call-up. Although not yet the first-choice at Bayern, the consistent performance of the 22-year-old goalkeeper makes him a potential backup option for Manuel Neuer's position in the future.

On the other hand, the absence of Jamal Musiala is a considerable loss. The Bayern attacking star has just returned from a long-term injury but continues to face ankle issues. The coaching staff decided not to risk using him in these friendly matches, prioritizing his full recovery before entering a crucial phase.

Additionally, this squad still includes key players such as Antonio Rudiger, Kai Havertz, and Leroy Sane, maintaining a balance between experience and youth. Notable names like Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Fullkrug were not called up due to insufficient performance.

This 26-player squad is seen as an important preparatory step for the "Tank" towards the 2026 World Cup. After securing qualification early for the planet's biggest football event, the German national team is entering a phase of squad refinement, where the upcoming two friendly matches will play a key role for Nagelsmann to evaluate and select the optimal core.
