The World Football Federation (FIFA) has officially approved the organization of a completely new tournament named the FIFA ASEAN Cup, scheduled to take place from September to October 2026. The announcement was made after an online meeting of the FIFA Council at its headquarters in Zurich (Switzerland).
Accordingly, FIFA confirmed that this tournament was first presented at the ASEAN Summit in October 2025 in Malaysia and received positive feedback from countries in the region. Although the detailed format has not been announced, this is the first official update since the idea of a tournament for the 11 Southeast Asian national teams was announced.
Notably, the introduction of the FIFA ASEAN Cup means that teams in the region may have to participate in two major tournaments consecutively in 2026. Previously, the ASEAN Championship (AFF Cup), now also known as the ASEAN Hyundai Cup, will take place from July 24 to August 26. This is a traditional tournament organized by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) every two years, considered the most prestigious competition in the region since 1996.
In the 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup edition, the Vietnamese national team, the reigning champion, is in Group A alongside Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the winner of the Timor-Leste or Brunei match. Meanwhile, Group B includes Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos. Having to play densely within a short period promises to be a major challenge regarding physical fitness and squad depth for the teams.
However, for the Vietnamese national team, the emergence of the FIFA ASEAN Cup brings several advantages. This tournament will be held within the new FIFA Days period, lasting from September 21 to October 6, 2026, replacing the previous short-term training camps. Each team can play up to four matches during this period.
