Argentina is recognized as the winner over Spain in the Finalissima.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez stirred controversy by stating Argentina won the Finalissima twice, following the cancellation of the game with Spain due to disputes between UEFA and CONMEBOL.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez caused a stir by proclaiming Argentina as the "two-time Finalissima champion," amid the cancellation of the showdown between the Copa America champion and the Euro champion. was officially canceled.

The anticipated clash between Argentina and Spain could not take place after negotiations between UEFA and CONMEBOL completely collapsed. In this situation, the South American side displayed a firm stance, even suggesting the title should default to their representative.

Speaking at the Copa Libertadores draw ceremony, Dominguez did not hesitate to mock the European champion. The dispute between the two federations mainly revolves around failing to agree on venue and timing, with both sides repeatedly accusing each other of inflexibility in negotiations.

Beyond professional disagreements, tensions escalated quickly when Dominguez likened Spain's hesitation to an act of surrender. He also urged Argentinians not to view European football as the ultimate standard, asserting that Albiceleste is the true "king" in the intercontinental arena.

“If counted as forfeits, you are the two-time Finalissima champion. And the important thing is to believe in yourselves, not that the ‘grass on the other side’ is always greener,” Dominguez shared with DSports.

In another interview with Radio La Red, he continued to emphasize the view that Spain had “given up on itself”: “You are Argentinian, right? Then congratulations, we are the two-time Finalissima champion, they didn’t even show up.”

On UEFA's side, the organization stated that the Argentine Football Association (AFA) itself rejected multiple proposals, including the option to hold the match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium with a 50:50 split of spectators. Additionally, the two-leg plan (one in Madrid on March 27 and one in Buenos Aires during a later FIFA Day) was also not accepted by Argentina.

UEFA emphasized that these proposals aimed to ensure the appeal and scale befitting a major event, but ultimately no common agreement could be reached.

Conversely, AFA and CONMEBOL argued that playing in Madrid did not guarantee sporting fairness, as it could not be considered a neutral venue when Spain was one of the two participating teams. The side of the 2022 World Cup champion stated they were willing to play in Rome on March 31, but the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) refused due to the packed La Liga schedule, with key players from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid facing each other just days later.

In an official statement, AFA affirmed they always desired to organize the Finalissima at a neutral location, while also stressing they accepted the option to play in Madrid after multiple UEFA proposals, yet still could not reach a final agreement.
