The Premier League match operations center issued a statement regarding the controversial incident, where Manchester United players expressed anger over not receiving a penalty, before Bournemouth scored the equalizer.
The controversial incident occurred in the 67th minute, when Amad Diallo fell inside the penalty area after a collision with Adrien Truffert. However, the referee waved his hand and denied Manchester United a penalty.
Immediately afterward, Bournemouth launched a quick counterattack and scored. Ryan Christie delivered a precise curling shot, defeating goalkeeper Senne Lammens, sending the ball into the low right corner of the goal.
Manchester United players instantly reacted to the referee, but the decision remained unchanged. VAR subsequently reviewed the incident quickly, yet Bournemouth's goal was still upheld, causing manager Michael Carrick and his players to become increasingly frustrated.
Christie's equalizer brought the match back to a 1-1 balance, after Bruno Fernandes had just opened the scoring from a penalty spot six minutes earlier. Manchester United received the penalty when Matheus Cunha was fouled by defender Alex Jimenez.
Following the controversial incident, the Premier League match operations center posted a statement on social media: “The decision not to award a penalty for Truffert's challenge was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as the level of contact was insufficient to constitute a foul.”
Manchester United quickly regained their lead just four minutes later thanks to James Hill's own goal from a corner situation. However, the drama did not stop there.
At the end of the match, Harry Maguire was sent off after committing a foul on Evanilson inside the penalty area. Referee Stuart Attwell determined this was a clear denial of a scoring opportunity and directly issued a red card to the English defender. Bournemouth subsequently received a penalty, and Junior Kroupi successfully converted it, concluding a highly controversial and emotional match.
