The FIFA rankings have been officially updated, with the Malaysian national team deducted 50 points, plummeting 14 places to rank 135 due to a forfeited match.
According to the latest update from FIFA, the Vietnamese national team has risen to the 103rd position globally, ranking 18th in Asia. This is considered a positive step forward for the "Golden Star Warriors" as the team aims for important goals in 2026.
The improvement in ranking comes from the Vietnamese national team being credited with points related to the match against Malaysia in the second match of Group F, Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Previously, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ruled that Malaysia forfeited with a 0-3 score in matches against Nepal and Vietnam due to violations of player eligibility regulations.
Thanks to this decision, the Vietnamese national team regained 13.91 lost points, raising the total to 1,213.62. Consequently, the team under the coach climbed 5 places on the FIFA rankings, moving closer to the top 100 strongest teams worldwide.
On the contrary, the Malaysian national team suffered significant losses, not only forfeiting two matches but also being deducted approximately 50 points. As a result, the "Malayan Tigers" dropped 14 places to the 135th position globally, losing their lead in Group F and their advantage in the race for a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup finals, now with only 9 points and a +2 goal difference.
Currently, the Vietnamese national team has gathered and entered the training phase preparing for the FIFA Days in March. The team will have a friendly match against Bangladesh on March 26 at Hang Day Stadium (Hanoi), before hosting Malaysia on March 31 at Thiên Trường Stadium (Ninh Bình) within the final qualifying round for the Asian Cup 2027.
According to the schedule, in the final match on March 31, 2026, at Thiên Trường Stadium (Ninh Bình), the Vietnamese national team will host Malaysia. Although it no longer determines the final standings, the match is still expected to be a noteworthy contest, meaningful for accumulating points on the FIFA rankings, maintaining performance, and preparing for the journey in the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
With the current upward trend, if favorable results continue in the upcoming two matches, the Vietnamese national team can further improve its position on the FIFA rankings and soon return to the world's top 100.
