Malaysian fans react strongly as their national team loses points, drops significantly on FIFA rankings, criticize FAM and express concerns about the future following AFC sanctions.
According to the latest update from FIFA, the Vietnamese national team has risen to 103rd place globally, ranking 18th in Asia. This is seen as a positive step forward for the "Golden Star Warriors" as the team aims for important goals in 2026. After dropping 14 places on FIFA's rankings, Malaysian fans collectively voiced their opinions, creating a wave of strong reactions on social media.
Most opinions expressed disappointment over the free fall of the "Malayan Tigers". One fan bluntly commented: “The shame of Southeast Asia", saying that the loss and deep ranking drop negatively impacted the image of Malaysian football specifically and the region generally. This viewpoint was also shared by many as the team was once expected to compete fairly in Southeast Asia.
Not stopping at disappointment, many fans also directed criticism towards the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). One notable comment wrote: “FAM should disband, it's chaotic every year”. This reaction shows that fans' trust is seriously shaken, especially after the penalty related to using players who did not meet eligibility requirements.
However, amidst the wave of negativity, there were also positive voices encouraging the team. One fan briefly shared: “Come back stronger", expressing hope that Malaysia can overcome this difficult period and regain its position soon.
The loss of nearly 50 points and falling to 135th place globally is not just a shock in terms of ranking, but also makes fans worry about the team's future, especially as the 2027 Asian Cup qualification is still ongoing. From a competitive position, Malaysia now faces significant pressure both in performance and in maintaining fan trust.
Clearly, the strong reaction from fans is a warning for Malaysian football. Without timely changes, from management to development direction, the team will struggle to restore its image and support as before.
