Liverpool Targets Premier League Sensation Cody Gakpo Replacement

In their plan to overhaul the attack after a turbulent season, Liverpool has identified Newcastle's Anthony Gordon as the primary target to replace forward Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool is planning a major revamp of its forward line following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. With 10 defeats in the Premier League, Arne Slot's team must seek new options, particularly on the left wing— where Cody Gakpo has not met expectations.

According to multiple sources, Anthony Gordon has emerged as Liverpool's top target. The Newcastle United player is having an impressive season with 17 goals and 5 assists across all competitions, becoming one of the standout names for the Magpies.

Liverpool's interest in Gordon is unsurprising. The English forward possesses speed, dribbling ability, and a direct style of play—elements currently lacking at Anfield. Additionally, Gordon's pressing and defensive support fit the football philosophy manager Arne Slot aims to implement.

A notable point is Gordon's versatility across multiple attacking positions, from left wing, right wing, to a number 10 role or a withdrawn striker. This provides Liverpool with additional tactical options, especially when Mohamed Salah and Gakpo have lacked consistency.

Former star Chris Waddle commented: “Gordon is playing fantastic football at Newcastle. I rate him very highly, and clearly the managers do too”. He also believes the player could be attracted by the opportunity to compete for trophies at Liverpool.

In fact, Liverpool was very close to signing Gordon in 2024 when Newcastle faced financial difficulties. However, the deal did not materialize as the club opted to sell other players to balance the budget while retaining Gordon with a new contract.

Gordon was born in Merseyside and was a product of the local youth academy, which could help him easily gain support from Liverpool fans

Currently, the situation may change. Newcastle faces the risk of missing European qualification, which could force them to consider selling key players. In that scenario, Gordon could become a viable target for Liverpool, though the expected price would not be cheap, likely exceeding the £52 million valuation.

Nevertheless, this deal still faces obstacles. Manager Eddie Howe stated: “He must focus entirely on the present and the upcoming matches”, indicating Newcastle is not ready to lose their star.

For Liverpool, the need to upgrade the attack is clear. If they successfully recruit Anthony Gordon, the team would gain an energetic attacking weapon aligned with their long-term strategy.

The upcoming summer promises to be a decisive period, as Liverpool must make choices to improve the squad and return to the title race.
