Michael Owen doubts Benjamin Sesko is not yet capable of leading Manchester United to a championship challenge, despite his clear improvement under Michael Carrick.
Former star Michael Owen drew attention by bluntly questioning the future of Benjamin Sesko as Manchester United's primary striker, despite his markedly improving form.
Last summer, Manchester United spent up to 74 million Pounds to bring Sesko to Old Trafford, hoping to solve their scoring issues. However, under Ruben Amorim, the Slovenian striker had a difficult start, scoring only 2 goals in the first half of the season. Things only truly changed since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager.
Under Carrick's guidance, Sesko gradually "transformed," scoring 8 goals in his last 11 matches across all competitions, playing a key role in helping Manchester United climb to 3rd place in the Premier League. His regained confidence has made the 22-year-old shooter an important piece in the attack.
Nevertheless, Michael Owen remains cautious. The former English striker believes Sesko is not yet of the caliber to become the spearhead in a title pursuit. "He is not the long-term solution. If it were the most important match of the season, I don't think he would start. Manchester United needs a striker of higher caliber if they want to compete for the title," Owen stated.
According to Owen, Sesko can develop and play a useful role in the squad, but the Red Devils still need to seek an "upgrade" in the near future. He emphasized that the current form is a positive sign, but not enough to fully rely on for major ambitions.
On the other hand, Owen praised manager Carrick extensively. He believes that after years of unsuccessful experiments, Manchester United may have found the right direction. "It's unclear why a long-term opportunity wasn't given to Carrick. If the season had started from the point he took charge, Manchester United might be leading the table," Owen added.
For now, Manchester United faces a challenging final stretch of the season with a series of tough opponents. This will be a crucial test for both Sesko and Carrick to prove their capabilities, as well as their ambition to return the club to the pinnacle of English football.
