Mbappe breaks silence on misdiagnosed knee injury at Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe has refuted claims that Real Madrid misdiagnosed his knee injury, asserting that the Spanish club's medical team made no errors.

Previously, controversy arose after a journalist from RMC Sport reported that Real Madrid's doctors examined his healthy right knee instead of his injured left knee in December. This information was subsequently republished by several Spanish newspapers, suggesting that the French forward's partial ligament tear was not detected promptly.

However, during a media briefing on Wednesday while training with the French national team ahead of a friendly match against Brazil, Mbappe openly denied these allegations.

“The claim that they examined the wrong knee is untrue,” Mbappe stated. He also acknowledged that his lack of timely updates may have fueled speculation, adding that if the media had been provided with clearer information, misunderstandings could have been avoided.

The French star emphasized that his relationship with Real Madrid's medical staff has been transparent throughout the recovery process. During treatment, Mbappe was closely monitored by a team consisting of doctors, physiotherapists, and the club's fitness department. He also traveled to Paris for a second professional consultation, but the final conclusion aligned with Real Madrid's treatment plan.

The French star emphasized that his relationship with Real Madrid's medical staff has been transparent throughout the recovery process.

Mbappe sustained his initial injury during the match against Celta Vigo on December 7th, but continued to play in subsequent games against Deportivo Alaves, CF Talavera, and Sevilla FC before his knee sprain was confirmed on December 31st.

The forward, born in 1998, briefly returned to play early in 2026 but then missed over three weeks following additional examinations. Subsequent consultations with French medical experts confirmed that Real Madrid's conservative treatment approach was appropriate.

After a period of rest, Mbappe returned to the field as a substitute in a Champions League match against Manchester City, before appearing again in the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Regarding his recovery, Mbappe expressed satisfaction with his current physical condition, stating that both knees are stable and praising Real Madrid's handling of his injury. He also stressed that the team's performance mattered more than his personal absence, affirming that Real Madrid played well during his injury period.

Currently, Mbappe has fully recovered and is ready to play for the French national team. He may even start in the friendly match against Brazil, dispelling any doubts about his fitness and recent injury.
