Despite losing 7 "illegally acquired" stars due to FIFA and CAS sanctions, the Malaysian team still has 13 foreign-born players in its 28-man squad preparing for the rematch at Thiên Trường Stadium.
The question of how many naturalized players Malaysia still has after the document forgery scandal is the focal point of attention before the rematch on March 31. In reality, coach Peter Cklamovski has not abandoned the policy of using foreign-born players; he was only forced to purge the "illegal" names. According to the latest call-up list, the "Malayan Tigers" still maintain a substantial foreign-born contingent with 10 mixed-heritage playersand 3 naturalized players.
Specifically, in defense, Malaysia retains its steel framework comprising players born abroad but with Malaysian heritage. These are names very familiar to Vietnamese fans, such as La'Vere Corbin-Ong (born in England), Dominic Tan (Singapore), Daniel Ting (England), and Quenting Cheng (Australia).
Most notably is the presence of the region's current top-class center-back – Dion Cools. This player, with a Belgian father, currently plays for Cerezo Osaka in J-League and is the only name experts consider a true "national team caliber" player among Malaysia's foreign stars.
In the midfield, Malaysia's physical strength still relies on players of English and Finnish origin like Stuart Wilkin, Ryan Lambert, and Nooa Laine. To compensate for the gap left by the 7 banned players (such as Rodrigo Holgado or Joao Figueiredo), coach Cklamovski has recalled the trio of naturalized players: Endrick Dos Santos (Brazilian origin), Paulo Josue (Brazilian origin), and Sergio Aguero (Argentinian origin).
These are individuals who were previously relegated to the bench or excluded in the first leg to accommodate the "illegally acquired" stars, now becoming the saviors for the island nation's team.
However, this number could have been 15 if strikers Bergson Da Silva and Giancarlo Gallifuoco hadn't encountered last-minute registration issues. Losing these two forwards further weakens Malaysia's firepower. The remaining 13 foreign-born players are mostly "old" faces who have tasted defeat against Vietnam's stars many times in the past.
Contrary to the opponent's weakening, the Vietnamese national team under coach Kim Sang-sik is visibly strengthening. The addition of two naturalized forwards, Nguyễn Xuân Son and Đỗ Hoàng Hên, has brought a fresh breeze to the attack. With Xuân Son's 1.86m physique and Hoàng Hên's elusive skills, the "Golden Star Warriors" possess diverse attacking options from aerial play to long-range shots.
The impressive warm-up with a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh shows Vietnam is ready. With key pillars like Nguyễn Filip, Quang Hải, and Hoàng Đức in high form, plus the return of Đoàn Văn Hậu, the current balance of power leans decisively toward the home team.
