Thai coach regrets not scoring more goals against Vietnam U23.

Thai U23 coach Thawatchai Damrong Ongtrakul shared his thoughts after the 1-0 victory over Vietnam U23 at the CFA Team China International Football Tournament – Xi'an 2026.

In this match, Thai U23 narrowly defeated Vietnam U23 1-0, with the sole goal scored by Thanakrit Chotmuangpak.

After the match, Coach Thawatchai stated: "This was a good game as we faced a strong Southeast Asian team like Vietnam U23. I must praise the players for managing their emotions well and maintaining focus throughout the match, despite pressure from the opponent.

I feel a bit regretful that we created many opportunities in both halves but couldn't convert them into goals. In the first half, the pace of play was sometimes too fast, causing us to lose possession unnecessarily."

The coach also mentioned he changed 8 out of 11 positions in the starting lineup compared to the match against China U23, aiming to preserve fitness and reduce injuries due to the tight schedule.

"The players given opportunities all demonstrated their capabilities well. The next goal is to check the physical condition and readiness of the players to prepare for the third-round match against North Korea U23."

Although the desired result wasn't achieved, the match continued to provide valuable professional experience for Vietnam U23, especially in the context of a significantly rejuvenated squad.

Through two rounds, the coaching staff gained more basis for evaluation and selection of personnel, thereby refining the squad towards key objectives like the 2026 Asian Games and future international tournaments.

According to the schedule, Thai U23 will face North Korea U23 in the next match of the tournament, taking place on March 31, 2026, at Fengdong Football Park East (China), at 14:00.

Meanwhile, Vietnam U23 will meet the host team China U23 at 18:35.
