Tottenham in Chaos: Poor from the Coaching Bench to the Top Brass

Tottenham is going through one of the most tumultuous phases in its history. The sacking of Igor Tudor after only 44 days is not the fundamental issue, but simply the outcome of an extended chain of errors that runs from the managerial seat to the top tier.

What is unfolding in North London at this moment reveals a collective lacking clear direction, both in terms of expertise and long-term strategic development.

Tudor and 44 Days of Chaos

Tudor arrived at Tottenham amidst a club needing stability and straightforward solutions. However, what he left behind was a series of ineffective experiments, even causing direct harm to the team.

The most controversial decision was likely Tudor's handling of the goalkeeper position in the match against Atletico Madrid. Dropping first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario to give Antonin Kinsky a chance backfired. Within just 17 minutes, Tottenham conceded three goals, and Kinsky was substituted in a moment symbolic of Tudor's brief reign.

In tactical terms, Tudor proved stubborn with a three-center-back system, a setup that had brought him success at previous clubs. However, in the context of Tottenham suffering personnel shortages due to injuries, this choice was counterproductive. Despite signs of failure appearing very early, Tudor was slow to adjust.

The midfield was no better. Combining players inclined towards physical contests like Conor Gallagher, Yves Bissouma, and Joao Palhinha left Tottenham almost devoid of creative ability. With key pillars such as James Maddison or Dejan Kulusevski absent, the team became even more stagnant.

Notably, Tudor failed to utilize Xavi Simons, one of the few players capable of creating breakthroughs. After an impressive performance against Atletico, Simons was unexpectedly dropped from the starting lineup in the crucial match against Nottingham Forest—a puzzling decision given Spurs' desperate need for attacking ideas. Tudor also stirred controversy with his conduct. Publicly criticizing the team after the loss to Fulham was seen as unwise, especially when he had not yet established credibility in the dressing room.

In the defeat to Crystal Palace, panicked substitution decisions further exposed Tudor's confusion. Shuffling the lineup immediately after receiving a red card not only failed to stabilize the team but also made the match situation chaotic. Players forced into unfamiliar positions, like Mathys Tel playing as a wing-back, led to cascading errors.

Another issue was the constant positional changes for players. Pedro Porro, Archie Gray, and Palhinha all had to adapt to multiple roles within a short timeframe. This instability directly impacted individual form and the team's overall organization. All this paints a general picture: Tudor did not provide the simplicity and clarity Tottenham needed; instead, he made the team more tangled.

Tudor was very poor, but Tottenham's top brass bears the primary responsibility

Only focused on making money

Although Tudor made many mistakes, Tottenham's problems did not start with him. The decision to appoint a manager lacking Premier League experience during a sensitive period clearly reflects the lack of direction from the leadership.

Over many years, Tottenham has grown strongly commercially. A modern stadium, top-tier facilities, and steady revenue growth have placed the club among the world's highest-earning groups. However, investment in footballing aspects has not been proportionate.

Even a senior club executive admitted that Tottenham has not focused sufficiently on the professional side. This is evident in their operational approach: an entertainment brand, an event venue, more than a pure football team.

The appointment of Tudor is a prime example. There were no signs indicating the club had a clear long-term plan after Thomas Frank's decline. The manager selection process seemed lacking in depth, even influenced by old connections rather than comprehensive evaluation.

Furthermore, management capability raises many questions. The lack of football experience at the executive level leads to crucial decisions being inaccurate. Even assembling Tudor's coaching staff was not thoroughly prepared, resulting in shortcomings from the outset.

Transfer operations are also a persistent issue. Looking at the list of the club's most expensive signings in history, most have not met expectations or provided long-term value. Tottenham frequently misses top targets, then turns to less convincing alternative options.

The current squad therefore lacks balance in quality and experience. Some players are not of sufficient caliber, while those with potential only view Tottenham as a stepping stone.
