Harry Maguire has been charged by the English Football Association (FA) for insulting the fourth official, after receiving a red card in the match against Bournemouth.
Defender Harry Maguire is facing the risk of a long-term suspension after getting involved in disciplinary trouble during the match between Manchester United and Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Specifically, in the final minutes of the match, Maguire received a red card following a foul that denied a clear scoring opportunity for the opponent. This decision put the Old Trafford side in a disadvantageous position, before Bournemouth capitalized on the subsequent penalty to score an equalizing goal.
Not only limited to the red card, the 33-year-old defender also reacted sharply towards referee Stuart Attwell. According to reports, Maguire continued to show dissatisfaction by approaching and arguing with the fourth official outside the touchline.
The English Football Association (FA) subsequently quickly intervened and issued an official announcement regarding the incident. The organization stated that Maguire is accused of improper conduct, as well as using insulting and abusive language towards the fourth official after being sent off.
The FA announcement clearly stated: “Harry Maguire has been charged after receiving a red card in the 78th minute of the match between Manchester United and Bournemouth on March 20. The player is alleged to have engaged in inappropriate behavior and/or used insulting language towards the fourth official. Maguire has until April 2 to respond.”
Currently, Maguire has received a one-match suspension for the foul that denied a scoring opportunity. However, with the new charge from the FA, the penalty imposed on him could certainly be increased if found guilty of the violation.
Notably, this is the first time Maguire has been sent off while wearing the Manchester United jersey. Previously, the last time he received a red card was in 2019 when he was still playing for Leicester City, and coincidentally, the opponent at that time was also Bournemouth.
This incident will undoubtedly cause headaches for Maguire and the Manchester United coaching staff, especially as the team is entering a crucial phase of the season.
