Vietnam National Team holds two world-leading statistics in the March FIFA Rankings: the highest ranking increase and the most points gained.
FIFA's official website has just released notable statistics from the April 1, 2026 update. Notably, the Vietnam national team is highlighted in two most impressive categories: the team with the highest global ranking increase (up 9 places) and the team accumulating the highest points (+36.17 points).
FIFA also confirmed the breakthrough figures of the Vietnam national team following the victory over Malaysia, showcasing the strong progress of the "Golden Star Warriors." The Vietnam National Team officially returned to the world top 100 after defeating Malaysia and climbed to the 99th position globally.
Two main factors contributed to this achievement. First is the series of victories in March. On March 26, Vietnam easily overcame Bangladesh 3-0 in a friendly match. Subsequently, on March 31, Coach Kim Sang-sik's team defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. These two wins brought a total of 12.05 points.
Additionally, the Asian Football Confederation decided to award default losses to Malaysia for its matches against Vietnam and Nepal. Consequently, the 0-4 defeat result was adjusted to a 3-0 win for Vietnam, allowing FIFA to add 24.12 points to the team.
Overall, Vietnam gained an additional 36.17 points in less than two weeks, leading to a leap on the rankings. The team rose 9 places, from position 108 to 99 globally, officially returning to the FIFA top 100 for the first time since early 2024. This is also the team's highest ranking under Coach Kim Sang-sik.
Within Asia, Vietnam currently ranks 17th. In Southeast Asia, the team ranks second, behind Thailand (93rd), and far ahead of rivals such as Indonesia (122nd), Philippines (135th), Malaysia (138th), and Singapore (147th).
Previously, under Coach Park Hang-seo, Vietnam maintained a position within the world top 100 for many years. However, a series of poor results during Coach Troussier's tenure caused a sharp decline, from 94th to 115th in early 2024.
When taking over the team, Coach Kim Sang-sik also faced considerable difficulties. In his first 4 matches, he secured only 1 win. Even after the FIFA Days in October 2024, Vietnam fell to 119th before gradually recovering and achieving the current breakthrough.
