Enzo Fernandez sparks internal conflict at Chelsea

Chelsea's internal unity fractures as Enzo Fernandez stirs controversy in the locker room, while hinting at a potential departure amid a severe performance slump.

Chelsea is experiencing a period of significant instability, with the London club suffering four consecutive defeats across all competitions before the March international break. This poor performance streak jeopardizes their chances of securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season which is now seriously threatened, especially after two consecutive losses in the Premier League.

According to British media, vice-captain Enzo Fernandez reacted sharply in the locker room following defeats against Paris Saint-Germain (two matches), Newcastle, and Everton. Furthermore, the Argentine midfielder openly criticized some teammates, including goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, amidst the team's decline.

However, this behavior reportedly upset a portion of Chelsea's players. According to The Telegraph, the rest of the squad under manager Liam Rosenior still wishes to maintain unity to aim for a positive conclusion to the 2025-26 season.

Moreover, recent statements by Enzo Fernandez have further fueled speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to ESPN after the loss to PSG, the 25-year-old midfielder admitted: “I don't know. There are still 8 matches and the FA Cup ahead. After the World Cup, we'll see what happens.”

While back with the Argentina national team, Enzo Fernandez continued to attract attention by publicly expressing affection for Madrid. He stated he loves the city due to its similarities with Buenos Aires, from culture to cuisine. He even praised two Real Madrid legends, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

These actions have sparked rumors that Fernandez is aiming to join Real Madrid in the near future. If that happens, Chelsea might be forced to sell him during the summer transfer window.

On the other hand, the West London club has begun planning replacements. Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is reportedly very close to joining Stamford Bridge. Additionally, Chelsea is closely monitoring targets like Elliot Anderson, Kees Smit, and Lamine Camara.

If they wish to add creativity to their attack, the Stamford Bridge side is likely to restart efforts to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
