Vietnam and three Southeast Asian representatives create a historic milestone by maintaining four teams participating consecutively in two Asian Cup editions for the first time.
For the first time in history, the region Southeast Asia (ASEAN) achieves a proud milestone by having four national teams participating in two consecutive Asian Cup editions (2023 and 2027), demonstrating the strong rise of regional football.
The final ticket belongs to Thailand after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Turkmenistan in the decisive match. This result helps the "War Elephants" top Group D with 15 points, thereby officially securing qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. Previously, three other Southeast Asian representatives had already secured their spots, including Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. Among them, Indonesia earned a direct ticket through their performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while Vietnam and Singapore excelled by topping their groups in the Asian Cup qualifiers.
Unfortunately, Philippines could not increase the number of ASEAN representatives to five after being held to a 1-1 draw by Tajikistan in the final match. This is the third time in history Southeast Asia has four representatives at the Asian Cup, following the 2007 and 2023 editions. However, the special point is this achievement is maintained for two consecutive editions for the first time, showing the clear progress of regional football on the continental stage.
Historically, Thailand remains the ASEAN national team with the richest tradition at the Asian Cup, having participated 9 times. Vietnam and Indonesia follow with 6 appearances, while Malaysia has 4 times, and Singapore 2 times.
The best achievement of the region still belongs to Myanmar with the runner-up position in 1968. Meanwhile, Vietnam twice reached the quarter-finals (2007, 2019), and Indonesia made a mark by advancing to the round of 16 in 2023.
Having up to four representatives at the 2027 Asian Cup is not only a pride but also proof of the balanced development of Southeast Asian football, promising to bring many surprises at the continent's biggest competition.
