Forward Gabriel Martinelli is confronting a wave of severe criticism and the possibility of a retrospective sanction from the FA, after his uncontrolled behavior directed at referee Sam Barrott.
Arsenal's 1-2 defeat to Southampton in the FA Cup not only resulted in the London club's elimination but also sparked a controversial incident involving Gabriel Martinelli.
In the 94th minute, while attempting to quickly execute a free kick, Martinelli pushed referee Sam Barrott's arm. The referee immediately issued a yellow card as a warning, but this incident instantly provoked fierce debate after the match.
According to multiple sources, The Football Association has reviewed the case. However, the likelihood of Martinelli receiving additional punishment is low, as the match referee dealt with the situation directly on the field. This typically prevents the FA from further intervention, unless there are exceptionally serious factors involved.
Nevertheless, not everyone agrees with this decision. Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey sharply criticized the Brazilian player's action. He stated: “That was a clear lack of respect toward the referee. To me, it should have been a red card; you cannot touch the referee under any circumstances.”
An organization supporting referees in England also called for the FA to take stronger measures to protect the credibility of officials. They argued that without strict handling, similar behaviors could continue to occur at other levels of football.
Notably, this is not the first time Martinelli has sparked controversy related to on-field contact. Earlier in the season, he escaped punishment after pushing Liverpool defender Conor Bradley, causing the player to suffer a serious injury.
This incident further increases pressure on Arsenal, as the team has just experienced a series of disappointing results. After losing in the League Cup final and being eliminated from the FA Cup, the Gunners now have only two remaining objectives: the Premier League and the Champions League.
Coach Mikel Arteta will certainly need to address not only professional issues but also the psychology and discipline of the players during this decisive phase of the season.
Regarding Martinelli, even if he might avoid severe punishment from the FA, his image has been affected by this uncontrolled incident. In the high-pressure environment of top-level football, such moments of lost composure can have consequences far greater than a mere disciplinary card.
