Arsenal will dismiss manager Mikel Arteta if he fails to secure the Premier League or Champions League title this season, according to a shocking report from Spain.
Currently, the Gunners lead second-place Manchester City by 6 points in the Premier League standings. However, this gap could be completely erased if they lose to Pep Guardiola's side on Sunday, while Manchester City wins their postponed match against Crystal Palace.
Arsenal has been considered the top contender for the Premier League title for many months. Nevertheless, their hopes of winning the championship were impacted after a 1-2 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday. Across all competitions, the London club has lost three of their last four matches, except for a 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Previously, multiple sources indicated that Arteta was negotiating a contract extension with Arsenal. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also revealed that discussions would continue after the 2025-26 season concludes.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal's leadership will decide to dismiss Arteta if he cannot deliver the Premier League or Champions League trophy this season.
Additionally, the Spanish source also reported that former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is the preferred candidate to replace Arteta in the summer. Currently, the 38-year-old strategist is leading Como in Serie A and has helped the club rise to fifth place in the standings after an impressive domestic season.
Although Arsenal is experiencing an unstable performance phase recently, the opportunity to win the Premier League remains within their grasp. Simultaneously, the team is also regarded as one of the contenders for the Champions League title.
However, Arteta has shifted to a more pragmatic style of play this season, and his reputation could be severely affected if Arsenal ends the season without any trophies. This scenario is entirely possible if the current form does not improve.
Nevertheless, Arteta deserves more time, considering the positive changes he has brought to Arsenal since taking charge. Dismissing him at this moment could be a major mistake, despite the positive signs Fabregas has shown in his early coaching career.
