The Thai U23 side disappointed fans by settling for a 1-1 draw with Kyrgyzstan's U23 on home soil during a preparatory friendly for future competitions.
Thailand's U23 team kicked off their campaign in the June friendlies below expectations, struggling to secure a 1-1 draw against Kyrgyzstan's U23 at their home ground in Pathum Thani. Despite being favored and enjoying home advantage, the "War Elephants" put on a lackluster performance that lacked sharpness.
From the first half, Thailand's U23 faced significant difficulties against Kyrgyzstan's disciplined, physically robust defensive play. The hosts' attacks lacked pace, while the midfield failed to establish necessary connections, leaving them almost unable to break through to the opponent's goal.
Not only did they fail to apply pressure, but Thailand also conceded a goal in the 45th minute from a quick Kyrgyzstan counterattack. Daniel Omarov made the most of the opportunity to put the visitors ahead, leaving the hosts chasing the game just before halftime.
In the second half, Thailand's U23 pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, despite having more possession, their attacks lacked creativity and were frequently easily neutralized by the opposing defense.
It wasn't until the 83rd minute that the hosts' efforts paid off, as Yotsakorn Burapha capitalized on a defensive error by Kyrgyzstan to score the equalizer. That goal proved to be the last of the match, sparing Thailand a home defeat.
Although they avoided a loss, Thailand's U23 performance raised many questions for head coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul. The manager undoubtedly has plenty of work to do before the team's upcoming friendlies against South Korea's U23 and the UAE's U23 in June.
