Thailand's U23 team is set to take on South Korea's U23 in an important friendly aimed at evaluating team capabilities and gearing up for the 2026 Asian Games.
Thailand U23 will step into one of the most notable matches of their preparation for the 2026 Asian Games when they clash with South Korea U23 at 18:00 on June 6 at Pathum Thani Stadium. This match is part of the June FIFA Days friendlies and is considered a quality test for the golden land's young football generation.
According to the Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand), this training camp is part of a long-term plan targeting the 2026 Asian Games to be held in Japan in September. Thailand U23 will play a total of three friendlies in June, facing Kyrgyzstan U23, South Korea U23, and UAE U23 respectively. Among them, the encounter with South Korea is the only match open to spectators and will be broadcast live on multiple platforms, including Thairath TV Channel 32, Thairath website, Thairath TV Facebook, Thairath Sport, and Thairath Sport YouTube.
Notably, FIFA has confirmed these matches as Tier 2 international friendlies. This means the games are recognized as official international friendlies, facilitating media coverage, promotion, and evaluation of the young players' international performance levels.
Under the guidance of head coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, also known to Thai fans as "Coach Wang," Thailand U23 has called up 26 players from top domestic clubs such as BG Pathum United, Buriram United, Chonburi FC, Port FC, and Muangthong United.
Before facing South Korea, the host team drew 1-1 with Kyrgyzstan U23 in their first friendly. After the match, Coach Thawatchai assessed his players' performance as relatively positive given that most of them had just assembled. However, he frankly admitted the team still has many areas to improve, especially in building play from the defensive line to the front.
The Thai tactician stressed that the most important objective of this training camp is to give playing opportunities to many players in order to evaluate their abilities and select the optimal squad for the 2026 Asian Games.
On the other side, South Korea U23 has brought to Thailand a squad of 24 players under coach Lee Min-sung. The East Asian representative's roster features several promising talents currently playing in Europe, such as Kim Ji-soo of Brentford, Yang Min-hyuk of Tottenham Hotspur, and Yoon Do-young representing Brighton.
The presence of these young talents developing in European football environments makes South Korea U23 an even more formidable opponent. Moreover, South Korea has won the gold medal in men's football at the last two Asian Games, cementing their top status on the continental stage.
Therefore, the match at Pathum Thani is not merely a friendly. For Thailand U23, it is a valuable opportunity to test their mettle, squad quality, and competitiveness against one of the strongest youth football nations in Asia. The result may not be the deciding factor, but the performance against South Korea U23 will be an important benchmark for the "Young War Elephants'" ambitions at the 2026 Asian Games.
