Reported by Wang Wei On June 5, Shenzhen Peng City Club announced the appointment of Robbie Neilson as the new head coach of the first team. The 45-year-old, hailing from Scotland, has a rich background in professional football coaching. The team is set to reconvene today, where Neilson will join the squad to kick off preparations for the upcoming CSL stage. Scottish coaches are rare in the CSL; for instance, Guoan manager Montgomery, though born in Leeds, once played for the Scottish youth team.

During his playing days, Neilson had a long spell with Scottish powerhouse Hearts, earning caps for Scotland and its youth teams. His coaching career also began in Hearts' youth academy. In 2014, he became Hearts' head coach, leading the team to the Scottish Championship title and promotion to the Scottish Premiership, followed by a third-place finish in the top flight and a spot in the Europa League qualifiers.
In 2018, Neilson took over another traditional Scottish club, Dundee United. During the 2019/20 season, he guided the team to the Scottish Championship title and promotion.
In 2020, Neilson returned to Hearts, again securing promotion to the top flight, reaching the Scottish Cup final, and qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League for two consecutive seasons.

In 2025, Neilson joined the coaching staff of Lommel SK, a Belgian club under the City Football Group, helping the team secure promotion to the Belgian Pro League in May. This experience allowed Neilson to deeply understand the football philosophy, talent development model, and operational standards of the City Group, while further accumulating expertise in international club management and team building.

Neilson expressed his honor at becoming the head coach of Shenzhen Peng City, thanking the club's management for their trust. "This is a club with a clear development plan and great potential. I look forward to embarking on this new journey," he said.
Neilson stated that Shenzhen Peng City is an excellent team full of potential. "I hope to help the players continue to grow and improve, repaying everyone's support with an aggressive, competitive style of play and striving toward our shared goals," he added.

As planned, Shenzhen Peng City will regroup today to prepare for the upcoming CSL matches. There will be some changes in the coaching staff, though several assistant coaches will remain. The team will conduct targeted training sessions in Shenzhen, where Neilson will get to know each player through daily drills and scrimmages, gradually integrating his coaching philosophy to form a tactical system and an ideal lineup.
Neilson will make his debut on June 19 in the FA Cup against fellow Shenzhen side Shenzhen Youth. Coincidentally, that day happens to be Neilson's birthday.
Regarding the mid-season coaching change, the club's Sporting Director, Stenz, said the decision was not easy. "After a comprehensive evaluation of the first half of the season, we believe the team needs new momentum and ideas at this stage, to further refine the tactical system based on the current squad and to continue shaping a competitive style of play."
Stenz expressed gratitude to Chen Tao for his contributions, especially for guiding the team to avoid relegation last season.
On the new coach, Stenz noted that the club sought an experienced leader with a proven track record of success, capable of improving both team and individual performances. The team brought in 15 new players this season, resulting in a more balanced age structure.
"After a rigorous and detailed evaluation, Neilson stood out. He has demonstrated his coaching ability across various environments and high-level leagues, with rich experience in team building, young player development, and improving competitive results. Neilson advocates for disciplined defensive organization and high-intensity transitions, which align perfectly with the development needs of this young and energetic team," Stenz said. "The mid-season break provides a good window for the new coach to integrate and adapt. We believe the team still has room for further improvement, as shown by the positive performances in recent matches."
