Malaysia U19 coach speaks out amidst surrounding pressure at Southeast Asian tournament

Nafuzi Zain urges Malaysia U19 to maintain composure ahead of the crucial clash with Thailand U19, a game that will decide group leadership and advancement to the knockout stage.

Malaysia U19 is enjoying a favorable start at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship having secured a full six points from the first two matches. However, ahead of the decisive encounter with Thailand U19, head coach Nafuzi Zain has called on his players to stay calm and focused, rather than being overly excited about recent results. The coach believes that the team's real challenge begins only in the final group stage match.

After a commanding win over Brunei, Nafuzi Zain expressed satisfaction with his players' performance but stressed that many difficulties still lie ahead. He shared: "Yesterday we played two matches, and so far so good. We have six points, which gives us a positive start. The players have shown good commitment, and I am pleased."

Besides the joy of victory, Malaysia U19 is also facing squad issues. Several players have suffered injuries during the matches, including captain Lutfil Hadi Sahabudin. However, the current situation is assessed as not too serious. Nafuzi stated: "After the first match, two players were injured, but now they are fine. Last night, the captain also got injured. Thailand is a strong team, and it will not be an easy match for us."

According to the 47-year-old tactician, Malaysia U19 is still in the process of improvement, as most players are only just becoming familiar with the tactical system he has built. He affirmed: "This is a newly formed team, and in any match they play, they can follow my style. So far we have won, but the expectation is to win against Thailand."

He continues to emphasize the need to maintain a stable mentality: "We take it one match at a time. The players are calm, they don't feel pressure. We don't want them to be too eager.
