Dramatic clash between U19 Vietnam and U19 Indonesia

The meeting between U19 Vietnam and U19 Indonesia at 8:00 PM on June 7 is expected to be highly tense. Both squads are tied on 6 points after two games and remain in a favorable position to qualify for the semifinals.

Currently, U19 Vietnam leads the group standings due to a superior goal difference. They defeated Timor Leste 3-0 and crushed Myanmar 5-0, giving them a goal difference of +8.

Meanwhile, the host team U19 Indonesia, under coach Nova Arianto, also boasts a perfect record with two victories. They beat Myanmar 3-0 and Timor Leste 3-0, achieving a goal difference of +6.

Despite having the same number of points, U19 Indonesia sits in second place due to scoring fewer goals than U19 Vietnam.

According to the tournament rules, only the group leader is guaranteed a place in the semifinals. Therefore, U19 Indonesia must defeat U19 Vietnam to seize the top spot in Group A.

The AFF applies a head-to-head criterion to determine rankings when two teams have equal points and have faced each other. Thus, the outcome of the match between U19 Indonesia and U19 Vietnam will directly decide which team claims the group's top position.

In that context, a win by any margin would allow U19 Indonesia to overtake U19 Vietnam in the final standings. Conversely, if the match ends in a draw, U19 Indonesia will have to settle for second place because U19 Vietnam has a better goal difference.

The same situation applies if U19 Indonesia loses. In that case, U19 Vietnam would officially become group winners and secure a direct spot in the semifinals.

Although victory is the primary goal, U19 Indonesia's chances of reaching the semifinals are not completely extinguished if they fail to beat U19 Vietnam.

U19 Indonesia could still hope to advance as one of the best second-placed teams. However, their fate would then not be entirely in their own hands, as it would depend on results from Group B and Group C.

When determining the best second-placed team, the first criterion considered is points, followed by goal difference. The head-to-head rule is not applied because the teams being compared come from different groups and have not faced each other.

There is another rule to note. Results against the bottom-placed team in each group will not be counted when evaluating the second-placed teams from Group A and Group B. This rule is applied because Group C has only three participating teams.
