Vietnam U19 does not seek a draw; Indonesia cannot afford to lose

Indonesia's U19 side is set to take on Vietnam's U19 team in the decisive Group A clash of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, scheduled for 8:00 PM on June 7. A win is mandatory for Nova Arianto's squad.

This match will be held at the Utama Sumatera Utara Stadium in Deli Serdang.

As defending champions, Indonesia U19 has shown impressive form in the group stage. They defeated Myanmar 3-0 and also beat Timor Leste by the same 3-0 scoreline.

Despite securing two consecutive victories, Indonesia U19 has not yet officially booked a spot in the knockout stage. This is because only three group winners and one best runner-up will advance to the semifinals.

Interestingly, the top spot in Group A will be decided in the showdown with Vietnam U19, as both teams currently have six points.

Vietnam U19 currently leads the group due to a superior goal difference, following a 3-0 win over Timor Leste and a 5-0 triumph against Myanmar. To secure a direct semifinal berth, both Indonesia U19 and Vietnam U19 will undoubtedly give their all in this match.

Indonesia U19 last faced Vietnam U19 at the 2022 Southeast Asian U19 Championship.

In that group-stage encounter, the team then led by Shin Tae-yong could only manage a 0-0 draw with Vietnam.

In terms of head-to-head records, Garuda Muda holds a slight edge, with two wins, one draw, and only one loss in their last four meetings against Vietnam.

With a semifinal ticket at stake in this match, Vietnam U19 is determined to fight until the very end in the final Group A fixture.

However, Indonesia U19, backed by thousands of supporters from North Sumatra, will also strive their utmost to secure a place among the top four teams.

In the second round of Group C, Cambodia U19 defeated the Philippines U19 3-0. This result has created a very special scenario in the race for semifinal berths, as the runners-up from Groups A, B, and C all have three points and a goal difference of +3.

The 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship features three groups. The three group winners and the best runner-up will advance to the semifinals.

Since Group C has only three teams while Groups A and B have four, the organizers will not count results of runner-up teams against the last-placed team in their group when comparing performances.

Vietnam U19 currently needs only a draw against host Indonesia to maintain the top spot in Group A and secure a direct semifinal ticket. However, if they lose, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's side will drop to second place and must await results from the other groups.

In an unfavorable scenario regarding tiebreakers, Vietnam U19 could still be eliminated despite winning both of their opening matches.
