Manchester City & Real Madrid: Two-Way Choice; Real Madrid Targets Gvardiol as Top Defensive Priority, Man City Offers Contract Extension

Since Real Madrid and Manchester City have met annually in the UCL in recent seasons, Man City's 24-year-old Croatian center-back Gvardiol knows both top-tier clubs well. At this peak stage of his career, the defender faces a choice between the two.

According to the latest report from Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid are actively searching the market for a defender. Their top and most ideal target is Man City's Gvardiol, which gives the player a pleasant dilemma of choosing between two clubs.

Real Madrid want to sign Gvardiol in this summer's transfer window to strengthen their squad. Signing a new strong defender is a primary goal for Los Blancos, and Gvardiol—who can play both as a center-back and a left-back—particularly fits their tactical needs. However, acquiring Gvardiol will not be easy. First, his current market value on Transfermarkt is as high as €70 million. Man City themselves spent €90 million to sign Gvardiol from RB Leipzig in the 2023 summer window. Real Madrid's transfer fee for him would not be lower than that figure.

Gvardiol's contract with Man City runs until 2028. The club already submitted a new contract extension offer to him in late March or early April. Gvardiol suffered an injury last season, making only 18 Premier League appearances (16 starts). His injury was a significant factor in Man City losing the league title. Now it comes down to Gvardiol's own decision, with Pep Guardiola's departure leaving the team uncertain. If Enzo Maresca takes over and maintains City's title-contending competitiveness, it could stabilize the squad. But if City suffer a slump next season, key players—such as Erling Haaland and Gvardiol—may consider leaving.
