Vietnam U19 is capable of turning Indonesia U19 into former champions

The game between Vietnam U19 and Indonesia U19 at 8 PM on June 7 at Sumatera Utara Stadium is not just about determining the Group A leader of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship; it could also mark a significant shift in the competition. With a positive outcome, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad has the potential to eliminate the reigning champions Indonesia from the title defense in the group phase.

Two years ago,Indonesia U19won the title on home soil after a 1-0 victory over Thailand U19 in the final.

That was the second championship in the history of Indonesian youth football, matching the achievements of Malaysia and Myanmar.

Meanwhile,Vietnam U19has only reached the top of Southeast Asia once, in 2017, tying with Japan U19 and Iran U19 in terms of titles won in this tournament.

However, past glory holds little significance in the upcoming showdown. What worries Indonesian fans is the current form comparison between the two sides.

After two matchdays, Vietnam U19 has shown the characteristics of a true title contender. Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's side has won both matches, scoring eight goals and conceding none. Beyond their attacking efficiency, Vietnam U19 has demonstrated discipline, solid organization, and excellent game control.

The greatest strength of the red-shirted team lies in their balance. The defense is solid, the midfield operates steadily, and the attack boasts several players capable of creating breakthroughs. The 5-0 win over Myanmar U19 shows thatVietnam U19does not rely on any single individual but can apply pressure from multiple positions.

In contrast, although Indonesia U19 also has six points, they have not been truly convincing. The hosts still show limitations in connectivity between lines, inconsistent ball progression speed, and frequent impatience in finishing.

Coach Nova Arianto has admitted thatVietnam U19is the strongest team in the group and urged his players not to be afraid going into the decisive match.

That is precisely why Indonesia U19 faces enormous pressure. Unlike Vietnam, who only need a draw to secure the group lead and a semifinal spot, Indonesia U19 must win. A draw could push them into competing for the best runner-up spot and risk elimination due to complex developments in other groups.

The pressure of defending the title, combined with the expectations of the home crowd at Sumatera Utara Stadium, will weigh heavily on Indonesia's young players. In youth football, psychological factors always play a major role, and not every team has the mettle to overcome them.

Conversely, Vietnam U19 enters the match with a more relaxed mindset. Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's players are highly confident after two consecutive wins. The recent head-to-head record of Vietnamese youth football against Indonesia is also very positive.

In particular, the ASEAN U23 Championship title won on Indonesian soil last July is a testament to the resilience of Vietnamese youth teams when playing under the pressure of home crowds.

Given their current form, disciplined play style, psychological advantage, and control over their own destiny, Vietnam U19 has every reason to believe in a positive result.

If that happens, Indonesian youth football will have to bid farewell to the dream of defending the crown as early as the group stage.

Vietnam U19 will send a strong message that they are not just in this tournament to secure a semifinal spot but are ready to aim for the highest goal—the second Southeast Asian championship in history.
