In the second group-stage match of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's Vietnam U19 team delivered an absolutely stunning performance. Against a tough opponent in Myanmar U19, our young players completely controlled the game.
The goal spree began with a close-range header from Tan Dung, before Cong Hau doubled the lead in the first half. In the second half, the momentum continued as Van Bach, Duy Khang, and Thien Phu each found the net, securing a resounding 5-0 victory for the "Golden Star Warriors".
In the later match that followed, Indonesia U19 only managed a 3-0 win over Timor Leste U19. Both Vietnam U19 and Indonesia U19 share the top two spots with a perfect six points each after two rounds. However, thanks to a superior goal difference (+8 vs +6), Coach Ikeuchi's side has brilliantly retained the top position in Group A.
The official answer at this moment is No. The format of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship is extremely intense: the entire tournament is divided into three groups, but only the three group winners and the single best runner-up advance to the semifinals.
To control their own destiny and boldly enter the semifinals, Vietnam U19 faces the following scenarios in the last group match:
Scenario: Win or draw against Indonesia U19: This is the ideal and most certain scenario. Since they hold a better goal difference than their opponent, a result ranging from a draw to a win against the hosts will secure Vietnam U19 the top spot in Group A and an automatic semifinal berth.
Scenario: Lose to Indonesia U19: If they unfortunately suffer a defeat in the final round, Vietnam U19 will drop to second place in Group A. In that case, the hosts would take the top spot with 9 points and secure direct qualification. Vietnam would then have to hope that their performance is good enough to become the best runner-up among the three groups to advance.
However, competing for the best runner-up spot is not simple. Since Group C has only three teams, when comparing records, results against the last-placed team of Groups A and B are not counted. This could significantly alter Vietnam U19's metrics if they fall to second place.
Based on what they have shown after two rounds, Vietnam U19 holds their destiny in their own hands. As long as they avoid defeat against Indonesia U19 in the match on June 7, Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi and his players will officially qualify for the semifinals as Group A winners.
