After a painful loss to Indonesia, has U19 Vietnam lost all chances of advancing?

U19 Vietnam must pin their hopes on the outcomes of the other two groups following their defeat to Indonesia in the last game of Group A at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship.

It seemed as though the ticket to the next round was within reach when they were tied 1-1 with Indonesia until the 90th minute, but a controversial penalty at the end of the match handed U19 Vietnam a heartbreaking loss. The 1-2 defeat to U19 Indonesia means that U19 Vietnam only finished as runners-up in Group A, severely jeopardizing their chances of advancing.

Since Group C has only three teams while Groups A and B have four, when comparing the best-performing runners-up, results against the last-placed team in Groups A and B are excluded. At this point, when compared to the runners-up of Groups B and C, U19 Vietnam’s record includes a 5-0 win over Myanmar and a 1-2 loss to Indonesia.

In the ranking of the best second-placed teams, U19 Vietnam currently has 3 points and a goal difference of +4. Although they lead this table, their fate depends entirely on the outcomes of other matches in Groups B and C. Tomorrow, U19 Thailand and U19 Malaysia will face off directly.

If that match ends in a draw, U19 Vietnam will be immediately eliminated, as U19 Malaysia as the group runner-up would then have at least 4 points when compared with other second-placed teams. Therefore, U19 Vietnam needs a decisive result—preferably a big win by U19 Thailand over Malaysia to give Vietnam an edge in goal difference.

Additionally, U19 Vietnam must also watch the result of the match between U19 Australia and U19 Cambodia. That game also must produce a winner, because a draw would give U19 Cambodia 4 points, which would certainly surpass U19 Vietnam’s 3 points. In short, if either of these two matches ends in a draw, U19 Vietnam will be eliminated.

Of course, the chance to advance still exists for U19 Vietnam, but at this point they no longer control their own destiny, and the probability of elimination is quite high. It is very possible that U19 Thailand and U19 Malaysia will play out a draw, as a tie would be enough for both teams to secure their spots while conserving energy for the semifinals.
