Italy wins second consecutive match, new generation makes Greece regret

(Soccer results) - Italy keeps demonstrating encouraging signals from its next generation after defeating Greece 1-0, thanks to a lone goal from Pio Esposito and standout performances from numerous young prospects.

Although they cannot compete in the 2026 World Cup, the Italian national team still offers positive signs for the future by once again beating Greece 1-0 in a friendly match held on the island of Crete.

Following the narrow victory over Luxembourg a few days earlier, interim coach Silvio Baldini continued to give chances to many young faces. The decision to call up one of the youngest squads in Italian football history sparked considerable debate, but the displays of these emerging talents are gradually silencing all doubts.

The Italian side had a win over Greece

Italy entered the match with great confidence and soon made the difference thanks to the country's rising young duo. In the 22nd minute, Jeff Ekhator provided a neat assist for Francesco Pio Esposito to strike from outside the box. The ball took a deflection off a Greek defender, leaving goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos completely stranded.

This goal further underlines the impressive form of Esposito, who has netted 5 times in just 9 appearances for the national team.

After gaining the advantage, Italy continued to apply pressure. Esposito kept the Greek defense on their toes, while Luca Koleosho almost doubled the lead when he hit the crossbar from a cross by Seydou Fini early in the second half.

However, the game took an unexpected turn in the 58th minute when young center-back Luca Reggiani was shown a straight red card for a foul on Tasos Douvikas in a one-on-one situation. This also marked the national team debut for the 18-year-old.

This was also the second straight victory for Italy in friendly matches

Despite having a man advantage for over 30 minutes of the final period, Greece was a major disappointment. The hosts controlled more possession but could hardly mount any real pressure on Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal.

The best chance came in the 84th minute when Christos Zafeiris unleashed a long-range effort that struck the post, much to the dismay of the fans at Heraklion Stadium.

Ultimately, Italy secured a 1-0 win to conclude the summer friendlies with two consecutive victories. Though the pain of missing the World Cup lingers, the performances of the young generation offer plenty of hope for the Azzurri going forward. Meanwhile, Greece continues to languish in crisis, having gone five games without a win.
