Vietnam's U19 team faces a 'do-or-die' scenario, now relying on a 'miracle'

No longer holding their destiny in their own hands, Vietnam's U19 team still has an opportunity to advance to the semifinals provided the last round of Groups B and C produces advantageous outcomes.

Vietnam's U19 team still has a chance to appear in the semifinals of the ASEAN U19 Championship, but coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad will have to wait for favorable results from the remaining groups after losing the ability to decide their own fate.

The final round of Group A in the ASEAN U19 Championship concluded with a focus on the decisive battle for the top spot between hosts Indonesia U19 and Vietnam U19. Coach Ikeuchi's team suffered a 1-2 loss in a highly controversial match. Consequently, Vietnam U19 finished the group stage in second place in Group A.

After three matches, the Japanese coach's team earned 6 points with a goal difference of (+7). This record still gives the team hope to compete for the best second-placed spot. However, the path forward is no longer in the hands of the red-shirted players. Since Group C has only three teams, the results of second-placed teams in Groups A and B against the bottom team are not counted. Excluding the result against the last-placed team, Timor-Leste U19, Vietnam U19 now only has 3 points and a goal difference of (+4).

According to the tournament's format, Vietnam U19 will qualify for the semifinals if favorable developments occur simultaneously in Groups B and C.

In Group B, the first scenario is that Brunei U19 finishes at the bottom of the group. In that case, Vietnam U19 only needs the match between Thailand U19 and Malaysia U19 to have a winning result. In other words, a draw would almost certainly close the door on Ikeuchi's team advancing.

If Singapore U19 is the team finishing last in Group B, the equation becomes significantly more difficult. In that scenario, Thailand U19 must defeat Malaysia U19 by any score. Conversely, Malaysia U19 can only help Vietnam U19 advance if they beat Thailand U19 by a margin of at least six goals.

Meanwhile, in Group C, Australia U19 is expected to complete their task by winning against Cambodia U19. This is considered the most likely scenario. However, Vietnam U19 would still benefit if Cambodia U19 pulls off a shock by beating Australia U19 by a margin of at least seven goals.

It is clear that after losing their autonomy, Vietnam U19's journey in the tournament now heavily depends on their competing opponents. Even a draw between Thailand U19 and Malaysia U19 could render all efforts by coach Ikeuchi's team meaningless.

Nevertheless, the door to the semifinals is not yet shut for Vietnam U19. What Vietnamese football fans most hope for at this moment is that Thailand U19 and Malaysia U19 will not "shake hands" to share points, and that Australia U19 completes their mission against Cambodia U19. If these conditions occur, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's team could very well secure a semifinal ticket as the best second-placed team.
